Anxiety and discomfort should never be a reason to delay wisdom teeth removal. Local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and IV sedation are all available at Innova Dental Implant Institute, giving patients flexible options based on their comfort level and medical needs. IV sedation is the most popular choice, keeping you fully relaxed and free from anxiety throughout the entire procedure. Dr. Dexter Mattox, and his team assess each patient individually to recommend the right sedation approach, whether it is a straightforward removal or a more complex surgical extraction. Your safety and comfort are the priority from consultation through recovery.

What to Expect During Wisdom Teeth Removal

Consultation

Dr. Dexter Mattox begins with a thorough evaluation using advanced 3D imaging to assess the position of your wisdom teeth and identify any impaction. Based on your imaging results, medical history, and comfort level, he will walk you through the recommended extraction approach and sedation options.

Procedure Day

On the day of your wisdom teeth removal, your chosen sedation is administered first, whether that is nitrous oxide, local anesthesia, or IV sedation, ensuring you are fully comfortable before anything begins. Dr. Mattox then performs the extraction with precision, removing the tooth cleanly and minimizing trauma to surrounding tissue.

Recovery

Most patients recover within 7 to 10 days. Some swelling, mild discomfort, and bruising in the first few days is completely normal and gradually improves. Dr. Mattox and his team provide clear aftercare instructions to help you heal comfortably at home.

Got four teeth pulled in one session and it was such a quick and easy experience! Staff were incredibly friendly (Erin!) and Dr. Mattox was great! After the procedure, they’ve continued to follow up with me and send me helpful tips and reminders to assist with the recovery process. I will definitely be going back for future procedures.

I had a wonderful experience from making the first appointment to the day of my sedated tooth removal. The technicians were extremely nice and helpful in making me feel comfortable and Dr.Mattox was very knowledgeable and made me feel safe and very comfortable during the procedure. I truly appreciate all they did for me to relieve my terrible pain. I received multiple calls checking on my progress and they did everything they could do to make sure I was not in pain. I loved the day by day instructions with pain management and diet restrictions to pain expectations, it was truly very helpful in my recovery.Thank you so very much!!

I’m not sure where to begin except to say I have a FEAR of dentistry. I try to avoid it every chance I get. But I got to a place where one of my molars was so painful I had to seek help. I searched everywhere for the best surgeon but also the most compassionate person who would understand my fear. What happened was the best series of dentistry experiences I’ve ever had. Every single person when I arrived to Innova, was calm, friendly professional and caring. They explained everything end to end and Dr. Mattox was incredible. You could just TELL you were in safe hands. He heard and acted on any discomfort and quickly handled my tooth extraction, talking me through the process. I could tell by the artful way that he operated that no unneeded trauma was made to my gum and jawbone meaning that my healing journey would be manageable, and it was. BUT HERES THE BEST PART!!! The AFTER CARE IS NEXT LEVEL! You don’t just stop being their patient after you’ve left. They send you with clear instructions, and check on you afterwards, personally with follow ups and friendly reminders to take care of yourself. The operation Dr. Mattox has at Inniva is really special. And I can’t thank everyone enough for a wonderful full service care experience.

Dr. Mattox and all his staff were amazing! After dealing with terrible tooth pain 4th of July weekend, I called them Monday morning, was given an appointment for an online video consultation Monday evening and an appointment for an extraction on Tuesday morning. From my very first phone call to the office until days after my extraction everyone I came in contact with was great! I even received a text Tuesday evening from Dr. Mattox checking to make sure I was doing good. I would recommend Dr. Mattox and his office to anyone needing an oral surgeon.

Innova is a oral surgeon, Dr. Mattox, extracted 2 broken teeth, talked about the procedure, told me everything he was doing during the procedure and a follow up later that day. Great staff, clean office and surroundings. Highly recommend if you oral surgery. Thank you.

Dr. Mattox did a fantastic job pulling my cracked tooth and placing an implant. It was quick, easy and basically painless. Barely even felt the initial numbing injection! Biting down on something solid with that cracked tooth hurt far worse than any part of the extraction. Great facility with easy access, state of the art equipment, and very friendly staff. Combine that with such a competent, personable doctor - what more could you ask for? Well, maybe you could ask to NOT NEED their services, but if you are reading this, I suppose the chances are pretty good that you DO - so book with Innova - you'll have no regrets!

I had an infected tooth and needed help quickly. When I called the office, Shelly took my information and walked me through the front office stuff. She is fantastic, I felt cared for and listened to. My appointment with Dr. Mattox was equally a good experience. It felt personal which I really appreciate. Dr. Mattox pulled my tooth that week. It was such an easy procedure. The clinical staff and Shelly were great walking me through everything leading up to the procedure. Dr. Mattox came in and asked me questions, and answered all of my questions. Before I knew it the tooth was out and I was on my way home. I will continue to use Dr. Mattox for some of my dental needs. I highly recommend you consider using him too.

In my 79 years, I have been seen by many dentists, some so-so, some not-so. Now after avoiding dentists for too many years I needed two extractions. Dr Mattox not only performed the procedure professionally, painlessly, and efficiently but showed me that he cared and continues to do so post surgery. If I could afford implants I wouldn’t hesitate to call Dr Mattox. He’s the best and my thanks.

FAQ’s About Wisdom Teeth Removal

Arrow

Why do I need to remove my wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth that do not have enough room to grow properly can become impacted, cause infections, push against neighboring teeth, and lead to long term oral health problems. Early removal prevents these complications before they become more serious.

What are impacted wisdom teeth?

Impacted wisdom teeth are teeth that are fully or partially trapped beneath the gum line because there is not enough space for them to emerge properly. They can cause pain, swelling, and infection if left untreated and typically require surgical extraction.

When is the best time for wisdom teeth removal?

Earlier is generally better. Most people have their wisdom teeth removed in their late teens or early twenties before the roots are fully formed, making extraction easier and recovery faster. However, removal can be performed at any age when necessary.

What is the difference between wisdom teeth removal and a regular tooth extraction?

A regular tooth extraction involves removing a tooth that has fully erupted from the gum line. Wisdom teeth removal often requires a surgical approach where the gum tissue is opened and the tooth is removed in sections.

Do I need a specialist for wisdom teeth removal?

Complex and impacted wisdom teeth cases are best handled by a specialist with surgical training. Dr. Mattox is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon with expertise to manage difficult surgical extractions safely.

Will I be sedated for the procedure?

Yes, several sedation options are available including local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and IV sedation depending on your comfort level and medical needs.

Is IV sedation safe for wisdom teeth removal?

Yes. IV sedation is a well established and commonly used option. Dr. Mattox evaluates each patient’s medical history before recommending sedation.

How do I know if my wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Common signs include pain or pressure at the back of the mouth, swelling around the jaw, difficulty opening your mouth, or recurring infections near the back teeth.

How long does it take to recover from wisdom teeth removal?

Most patients recover within 7 to 10 days. Some swelling, mild discomfort, and bruising in the first few days is normal and gradually improves.

What should I eat after wisdom teeth removal?

Soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, soup, and smoothies are recommended for the first few days following extraction. Hard, crunchy, or chewy foods should be avoided.
